My Little Pony: Magic Princess

From My Little Wiki

A mobile game based on G4 of My Little Pony and developed by Gameloft.

The initial story that the game starts off with has the player helping Twilight Sparkle rescue Ponyville from Nightmare Moon's darkness. Going through the quests for the storyline acts as a tutorial and guide for some of the basic functions of the game, and later quests continue aiding the player to newer features.

As the game has gone on with various updates, the game has added storylines from the G4 show, the comics, the 2017 movie, and the first Equestria Girls movie. The game will also have special timed events and theming based on holidays over the course of the year, and will typically have events that last about a week and a half that occur every other week or so.

Locations

Main area of the Map

All locations that players can visit are visible on the Map. They can be traveled to on the Map icon that is present on the bottom of the screen, or by tapping a specific spot, that varies based on the player's current location, but is typically a picture of a train or street sign.

Each of the accessible locations have some general and unique obstacles that can appear, usually in open areas, that need to be removed with bits or element shards.

The Travel Map background is the full map image with border that can be seen in other pieces of merchandise and posters. Players can move around the Map and see the full image, but can only travel to a few key locations.

Most characters, shops, and decor are location specific, but the Mane 6 can typically be seen in all locations as in each location they are given a hotel or campsite that would count as a home for them.

Crystal Empire

GameloftCrystalEmpireMap.PNG

The unique obstacle for this location is Sombra's corruption in the form of puddles, or spiky rock formations that can either be removed with element shards or bits.

Sweet Apple Acres

The unique obstacle for this location is a swarm of fruit bats from the episode Bats!. These swarms come in different colors based on the type of element shard needed to remove them.

Unique to this location, there are shop type buildings where food resources can be grown, and animal pens that contain animals that the player can then feed with the food to upgrade.

Canterlot

The unique obstacle in this location is the only one that does not require open spaces to appear, and will not hinder a player from building. Changelings that look like the base character appearance of the Mane 6 will be wandering around the location acting like a normal character until tapped. Then, they change into their true form and fly to a new spot where it will take element shards to remove them. The player can tell what type of element removes them by the color around them, similar to other obstacles that require element shards.

Ponyville

Ponyville is the main and original location of the game. The other locations were added over time in various updates. It is the largest location to build on out of all of them and has many unique features. The fountains where the element shards are stored and spent from are located here, and it is the location of the Golden Horseshoe Hotel for visiting characters players can win.

The unique obstacle in Ponyville are swarms of parasprites, which are various colors based on what element shard type is needed to remove them.

Changeling Kingdom

GameloftKingdomMessage.PNG

Pictured on the Map, but only available to visit for a specific event.

Everfree Forest

The Everfree Forest is the only location that players can always visit that they are not able to build on and decorate. The main building in this location is Zecora's Hut and four totem spots. There are also spots around the map to collect ingredients for the totems. These ingredients include: Purple Mushrooms, Joke Plant, Garlic, Black Iris, Sticky Sap, and Red Orchid. Only one of each can be collected at a time, and only up to five of each can be held at a time. Every time one is harvested, there is a waiting period to harvest again.

The unique obstacle in this location are the Plunderseed Vines from season 4's Princess Twilight Sparkle: Part 1.

Minigames

Ball Bounce

GameloftBounceTutorial.PNG

One of the three original games to level up a character's stars. The tutorial screen uses Pinkie Pie to show how to play, the background is the Ponyville Schoolhouse, and it takes 45 seconds to play. Each game has the chosen character on the left side of the screen, and the player swipes the ball toward the character so that the character and player can bounce the ball back and forth.

The player has several indicators for how to swipe the ball to get the most points, which also increase with consistent good hits.

  • An outer white dashed circle around the ball that starts further out and comes closer in, with it being closest to the ball giving the best score.
  • A solid circle around the ball that changes colors from red to yellow to green, with green giving the best score.
  • A large green arrow pointing at the ball, showing the best direction to hit the ball to get the best score.

When the game is started, the player can choose from three different ball design options that act as score multipliers as well.

The ball can also roll and bounce off screen. When that happens, there is an animation of a small blue foal that pushes the ball back into the main screen.

Apple Picking

GameloftAppleTutorial.PNG

One of the three original games to level up a character's stars. The tutorial screen shows Applejack with a background set in Sweet Apple Acres, and the game takes 30 seconds to play. The player's chosen character can run across the screen in the direction the player taps, and will be carrying or wearing baskets to catch the falling apples.

The apples come in three different varieties based on the score multiplier option the player picks at the beginning, and these options are green apples, red apples, and Zap Apples. During the game, the apples will appear on the trees and shake before falling. Sometimes apples will appear and then begin to fade as they turn into rotting apples that must be avoided. Not only will the player not get points for catching the rotten apples, but it will also cause the character to stop in their tracks and do some sort of head shaking animation.

Telescope

GameloftTelescopeTutorial.PNG

One of the current three games to level up a character's stars, and the only one of the current three to not change the game visuals to add animations of the chosen character while in play.

The game involves tracing dots that are animated stars to fill out a particular shape. Once the stars are connected, the image appears.

Clear the Skies

GameloftSkyClearTutorial.PNG

One of the three original games to level up a character's stars; it would be played when a character has fully won the experience points to earn a star. Currently, it is only playable during certain events.

The game involves a character of the player's choice constantly moving from left to right across the screen. If the character does not typically have wings, it will have the wings Rarity had in Sonic Rainboom. The character will generally be flying, but will also have a running animation if the player has them go toward the ground. The goal is to get as many points as possible in a limited time by collecting as many parasprites as possible, busting clouds to earn a speed boost, collecting stopwatches to increase playtime, and avoiding storm clouds and Shadowbolts. Parasprites come in purple, blue, and gold for different amounts of points. When a Shadowbolt is coming, there will be a warning exclamation point.

Crystal Mine

This minigame can be accessed on a character book page but is the only one there that is not a game that increases a character's star level. It can also be accessed on a particular spot in a location, or through the Activities tab.

The player picks the character of their choice to sit in a minecart on a track and travel from left to right collecting bits, element shards, and potentially gems further on, all while avoiding barrels, drop offs, slick tracks, Diamond Dogs, and Shadowbolts. Profile icons of the player's friends can be seen on occasion in the background showing how far they were able to get on the track. There are also various boosts that the character can pick up that can give a burst of speed, make it easier to collect bits and shards via magnet, shield the character from obstacles, and increase the value of bits collected. If a player hits an obstacle or falls, Rainbow Dash will swoop in and rescue them but the game will end unless the player pays gems or watches ads to be able to continue.

Equestria Girls

GameloftEQGTutorial.PNG

Typically accessed through the Activities tab but can also be accessed by tapping particular spots within a location, the Equestria Girls minigame is a dancing game where the player chooses one of the Mane 6 as Equestria Girls to dance with two more characters in one of five songs from the Equestria Girls movie.

These songs are:

  • Opening Theme
  • This Strange World
  • EG Stomp
  • Cafeteria Song
  • Time to Come Together

The first two songs are a different difficulty level from the other three.

The actual outfit of the player's chosen character can vary by what score multiplier the player chooses, and the other two characters that dance with them will have scores based on the scores of other actual players, who can be chosen from.

During the beats of the song, notes in the shape of the Equestria Girls horseshoe logo will move from right to left on the screen and the player will have to tap on them as they pass a white line. If it is a single note, the player simply taps with one finger. If two notes, it requires two simultaneous taps. Green notes need to be held for a period of time, and yellow notes need to be tapped repeatedly.

Find a Pair

GameloftFindaPair.PNG

A memory game that does not involve choosing a character, and can be accessed through the Activities tab. Cards with the profiles of the Mane 6 and several other characters are shown before being flipped over. Then the player has to correctly find the pairs. As the game goes on, the amount of cards being shown and flipped will increase. While there is a time limit to the game, correctly passing each round gives a few more seconds of time to play.

Lock 'n' Dart

Only available for specific events, players are shown a balloon and will have to tap the matching balloon out of a group of floating balloons.

Other Activities

Augmented Reality Studio

Every character has an option for the player to see them in augmented reality. This can be chosen by going to the Activities tab and going through the studio and then picking the character, or picking the character and choosing the camera icon on their book page.

The tutorial uses Rarity's model and shows how to move, scale, and rotate the characters.

The character selection option lets the player scroll left and right through tiles of the characters, and highlights the one the player chooses.

Zecora's Hut

GameloftZecoraHut.PNG

Zecora's Hut is a unique building in the Everfree Forest that can be accessed by going to the Everfree Forest, or to the icon in the Activities tab.

It features Zecora's cauldron, and lets you mix three different ingredients to produce various totems that create element shards. Totems come in a regular size, Greater, and Superior version, and will give whatever specific type of element the player chooses. If the player creates a Totem of Friendship, they will get a handful of each type of element shard.

Four totems can be placed outside the hut at once and will give shards several times before disappearing.

The various types of ingredients that can be found around the location:

The player can hold up to five of each ingredient in Zecora's Hut at a time.

Balloon Pop

Not to be confused with Lock 'n' Dart, there is an activity in the Activities tab where the player can choose from various types of balloon pops and be given five balloon options to pop. During a given pop, the player can only pop three of the five, but they can choose which ones. Depending on the type of pop and sometimes what the player already has, the prizes can be characters, shops, decor, clothing items, gems, bits, element shards, and occasionally other types of resources. Each type of pop will show a full list of options that can be won.

There can be a waiting period after doing a round on a balloon pop.

Fuse Decorations

Not all, but most decorations can be fused in a special area of the game found in the Activities tab. Earlier versions of the game would let players sell decorations back for bits, but in the current version of the game, decorations can be fused together for Fusion Tokens, which can be used in the Balloon Pop minigame, and for other types of resources during events.

Ferris Wheel

GameloftFerrisWheel.PNG

The Ferris Wheel is a unique building in Canterlot that can be accessed by going to Canterlot, or to the icon in the Activities tab. When chosen, an image of Flam is seen next to a Ferris Wheel with five possible options. The player can spend 13,000 bits and 11 laughter shards for a spin, and will receive whatever prize it lands on. Additional spins can be earned through watching ads or waiting.

Pony Editor

Pony Editor building in Ponyville

Accessed through a special building at some locations, through the Activities tab, or on a character's book page, this allows the player to change the outfits on certain characters and add/change/remove pets from most characters.

The three main sections of the Pony Editor are the Fashion Show, Pony Editor, and Pet Selector. The Fashion Show is for certain sets of outfits for the Mane 6, so that as the player earns the outfits, the Mane 6 characters will be added to the Fashion Show display. The outfits that ponies change into are typically crafted with clothing materials that can be earned around the whole game or earned during long term challenges that appear. Pets can be bought and rewarded in various areas and times of the whole game, and can be assigned to most regular characters. These will hang around the characters they are assigned to as they walk around their locations.

Quests, Goals, etc.

Quests

GameloftQuestIcon.PNG

This was the original way challenges and stories were presented in the game and where the tutorial comes from. Quests from here help advance opening territory on the map and unlocking new things. There will also often be a quest to watch ads a certain number of times for rewards and characters.

Goals

In the current version of the game, Goals are various types of goals that need to be completed within a 24 hour time period in exchange for tokens that can unlock specific characters, shops, and decor. There are always four Simple, three Moderate, and two Challenging Goals available, with values of 20, 30, and 40 tokens per type of goal, respectively. Each day, the player can only earn 120 of this type of token.

The specific goals can be swapped for gems or by watching ads, and the goals are generally about playing a particular minigame a certain number of times or to a certain score, earning food for or feeding the animals at Sweet Apple Acres, collecting ingredients or making totems at Zecora's Hut, spinning the Ferris Wheel, starting or playing the group quests, etc.. The particular values vary based on which level of Goal it is.

Occasionally, there will also be longer term challenges where earning a certain amount of these tokens over the course of a few days will have the player earn a particular character or more resources.

Group Quests

There are always three possible active Group Quests running at a time, and six main ones that are played. These are kind of like mini roleplaying campaigns.

A character will start off the campaign with a prompt, and then every new stage will give the player three options to choose from that will then lead to more or less points and resources rewarded. The three choices are made to look like they are coming from three of the characters the player has added to the campaign, with some specific characters giving the third Pro option, and the rest randomly giving the first two. Each stage will have a certain amount of wait time before the next one appears.

The player will also earn keys from playing the Group Quests that will help open a Group Quest specific chest of prizes.

If a character was pulled into a campaign, but needs to be switched out later to do a specific task for another event, the game is able to let the player switch out the characters.

Events

GameloftEventsIcon.PNG

Accessed on its own icon on the bottom of the screen, events here are brief challenges that can either be for the player alone or a social event. These could involve playing other mini games a certain number of times or to a certain amount of points. When solo, the player just has to follow the requirements. When social, the player is competing with other active members for certain scores.

This is also where players will find the Lock 'n' Dart game and Clear the Skies game if they are available.

Golden Horseshoe Hotel

GameloftHorseshoeHotel.PNG

Occasionally, players have an additional option to earn characters that appear in the Golden Horseshoe Hotel. This is a location that exists in Ponyville, but can be accessed on the Activities tab.

Characters will appear at random, and will have to be earned through giving typical resources like element shards, earning points in other minigames, playing other minigames a certain number of times, and earning various resources through giving characters tasks. These will have to be done in a limited time or the visiting character will leave.

Characters, Shops, Decor

My Little Pony: Magic Princess Characters

Miscellaneous Gameplay Mechanics

Resources

The main resources in the game are Bits, Gems, Element Shards, Hearts, and various types of tokens.

Shops give Bits and Element Shards, and certain ones will give Gems. Totems in Zecora's Hut and certain characters will give Element Shards. The Crystal Mine minigame, balloon pops, longer term story challenges, etc. can give various types of resources.

Element Shards are stored in fountains that exist in Ponyville. They cap at 999 each, but if the player taps on the fountain they can trade Shards for Bits, and even sometimes Gems by trading a large amount at once (~100).

Friends give Hearts. Adding someone as a friend lets the player visit their game to see what their locations look like, and lets players drop chests for each other, so any given player may be able to find chests left by their friends.

Things that the Player Can Find

One feature that has been in the game for a while is that sometimes Derpy will be seen hiding in a box around a location. Tapping on her gains the player coins and maybe a gem, and then she will fly around the location for a while before hiding again.

Another feature is that sometimes Spike will appear in random places in an undercover outfit. Tapping on him will gain the player a gem.

Fortune Shop

Every day, the Fortune Shop updates, giving the player a set of cards face down. The player taps on the cards to reveal what avatars, frames, ponies, etc. are available for sale.
