Twilight Sparkle in My Little Pony: A New Generation

G5 Princess Twilight Sparkle is a G5 My Little Pony first introduced in 2021.

Many moons ago, the alicorn Twilight Sparkle was a Guardian of Friendship who represented the element of Magic. Once a shining symbol of a united Equestria, now she is nothing but a legend whose story is passed down by the few that believe in it. She was the former ruler of Equestria and created the Unity Crystals in an attempt to ward off the evil alicorn Opaline Arcana, eventually leading to the disappearance of magic. She is also responsible for the magical bubble surrounding Equestria, hiding it from Opaline and the rest of the outside world.

Unliked most examples of reused names in My Little Pony, G5 Twilight Sparkle is intended in-universe to be the same character as G4 Twilight Sparkle.

G4 Mane 6 stained glass in My Little Pony: Tell Your Tale

Twilight Sparkle is a historical figure and the same Twilight Sparkle from G4 that ruled over Equestria many moons before G5's story began. Sunny Starscout's father, Argyle Starshine, told her stories of Twilight Sparkle and the other Mane 6 when she was a filly, and they were some of the only ponies who believed in her existence before the end of My Little Pony: A New Generation. Twilight Sparkle makes a cameo appearance at the beginning of A New Generation as a imaginary character in the game Sunny, Hitch Trailblazer and Sprout Cloverleaf play as foals. Sunny has a wooden toy of Twilight Sparkle made by her father.

She appears in a flashback story told by Discord in the IDW comics using her design from The Last Problem. He tells about Equestria's past, and how Twilight Sparkle created the Unity Crystals after the evil alicorn Opaline Arcana appeared to sew discourse among the pony types in an attempt to steal their magic.

Twilight Sparkle appears as a hologram in the My Little Pony: Make Your Mark episode Growing Pains to deliver a prerecorded message to the ponies who reunited the Unity Crystals, warning them about Opaline and telling them about new earth pony magic.

In the Make Your Mark episode The Traditional Unicorn Sleepover, Sunny and Misty Brightdawn tell their versions of the story of Equestria's past, including Twilight and Opaline's conflict and the creation of the Unity Crystals.

Spike the dragon is old enough to remember Twilight from ancient Equestria, and tells Sunny about his adventures with his pony friends in the Make Your Mark episode The Isle of Scaly.

In the My Little Pony: Tell Your Tale episode Misty-rious New Room, a stained glass window of the G4 Mane 6, including Twilight Sparkle, defeating Nightmare Moon can be seen.

Rainbow Celebration Twilight Sparkle is a poseable 5.5-inch alicorn with brushable hair. She was released as part of an Amazon-exclusive set to celebrate the different generations of My Little Pony, or three of them, at least. Izzy Moonbow and Sunny Starscout represent G5, Pinkie Pie, Rainbow Dash and Twilight Sparkle represent G4, and Minty represents G3.
