Sunset Shimmer was once a student of Princess Celestia, who began studying just before Twilight Sparkle did. Like Twilight, she put little emphasis on friendship and focused on her magic studies. However, unlike Twilight, Sunset Shimmer was arrogant and desired to gain power, despite Celestia attempts to restrain her. Eventually, Sunset Shimmer left when she did not get what she wanted quickly. She left through a magical portal into another world, where she took on human form. She would effectively become the school bully, terrorizing others and breaking up friendships. After some time, she returned to Equestria and stole Twilight's crown, which served as the Element of Magic. Though Twilight would win the crown at the school dance, Sunset Shimmer was able to take it for herself after a struggle. Sunset Shimmer would attempt to use the crown's magic as part of a goal to take over Equestria, but was unable to control it and transformed into a demonic entity. Twilight pursued Sunset and was able to retake the crown.

Sunset Shimmer was released as part of the Crystal Empire Masquerade set. She came with a face covering mask that was decorated in the style of her cutie mark.
