Blind Bags are bags that contain a small mystery toy. There are almost no reports of the blind bag packaging ending up in the US, they are mostly Europe exclusive. Supposedly the first G4 set of blind bag ponies has shown up in some JCPenny outlet stores.
Also the G4 main characters and a few US exclusive G4 characters have been sold in non-mystery packaging in the US.

The precursor to Blind Bags are the Tiny Tins from early Generation 3. These small figures came with tins, which was apparently too costly. Also, these were not a mystery purchase, which pony you got was clearly marked.
