Nightmare Moon was created when Princess Luna was transformed by her bitterness and jealousy of her older sister Princess Celestia. Nightmare Moon attempted to bring about eternal night and was imprisoned in the moon when Celestia used the Elements of Harmony. Nightmare Moon would reappear 1000 years later and would eventually be reverted to Luna when Twilight Sparkle and her friends use the Elements of Harmony on her.
Nightmare Moon was shown to have both illusion and shape-shifting powers. Her attempt to bring about eternal night pays homage to Tirek's plan in the first My Little Pony Special.

Talking Nightmare Moon
Nightmare Moon was released as a talking toy, similar to Princess Celestia and Princess Cadance. She said various phrases when you pressed a button near her cutie mark, and included a comb and four barrettes.
