US My Little Pony Pamphlet © 1984

Many pony sets were simply labeled as "My Little Pony" at the time of sale. Early '80s earth ponies are some of the most popular examples. It wasn't until the online collecting community developed that they were given different titles to distinguish them.

Year One (1982-1983)

Collector Ponies

The very first set of ponies, the Collector Ponies were sold under the "My Little Pony" set name umbrella. The "Collector Ponies" term was not coined until the online collecting community formed in the mid-late 1990s. Please refer to the Collector Ponies page for detailed information about them.

Year Two (1983-1984)

Earth Ponies

Bubbles' Backcard

Two new poses were introduced with this set – the Bow-Tie or "Shy" pose and the Bubbles or "Sitting" pose. The Earth Ponies are featured in a commercial with the Unicorn and Pegasus ponies in which the new poses are called the "Turning" and "Sitting" poses.

Year Two My Little Pony Commercial

Lyrics are as follows, sung to the familiar tune:

My Little Pony, unicorn,

A magical pony with beautiful hair.

My Little Pony, pegasus,

Imagine my pony flying through the air.

The new little ponies, in pretty poses,

Sitting and turning and prancing too.

My Little Pony, My Little Pony,

My pony, I love you.

My pony, I love you.

Four of the Year Two Earth Ponies, excluding Blossom and Seashell, are featured in the Rescue at Midnight Castle/Firefly's Adventure pilot episode. Applejack and Bow-Tie are main characters, while Bubbles has a non-speaking role. Cotton Candy has a few lines but spends most of her screentime transformed into a monster after being abducted by Scorpan in the first five minutes. She also has a minor role in the Escape from Catrina special.

Each pony includes a flower brush, ribbon, and round puffy sticker, as well as an order form for the first mail order pony, Ember.

Year Three (1984-1985)

Earth Ponies

This year’s releases are again a set of six ponies. Applejack and Bow-Tie were rereleased with longer, curly hair in this assortment. The Tootsie Pose and Posey or "Prancing" Pose were also introduced.

Lyrics are as follows, sung to the familiar tune:

[Instrumental where "My Little Pony, My Little Pony" typically plays]

Those are the new little ponies, there.

(Comm. 1) My Little Pony, My Little Pony, (Comm. 2) My Little Pony, New Rainbow Ponies,

I love to comb their beautiful hair.

The new little ponies, new pegasus ponies,

New unicorn ponies, just for you.

My Little Pony, new little ponies,

They're like a dream come true.

(Comm. 2 Only) They're like a dream come true.

Lickety-Split and Posey are featured characters in the Escape from Catrina special, and Cherries Jubilee, Lickety-Split, and Posey will become recurring characters in the My Little Pony TV series.

Each pony includes a butterfly brush, ribbon, and round puffy sticker, as well as an order form for the Birthflower Ponies.

The UK Earth Pony releases of this year were the same, except for Applejack and Bow-tie. While they share the same long, curly hair of this year's US releases, they are in the Collectors Pose rather than the Shy pose.
