UK Sea Pony Leaflet circa 1984

The Sea Ponies were first released in Year Two and were meant to be bathtime toys. Sea Ponies resemble seahorses. Only two sets of adult Sea Ponies were released, the last in Year Three, but there were many other sets of Baby Sea Ponies in the years that followed.

Adult Sea Ponies have metal weights in their tails to help them float upright in the bath. Each Sea Pony also has a shell stand with a suction cup on the back so that they could be stuck to the tub walls. Baby Sea Ponies each include a tube float in the likeness of a water animal to keep them afloat.

The Sea Ponies have acheived cult favorite status in recent years, thanks to their catchy "Shoo-be-do!" call that originated in the "Call Upon the Sea Ponies" song from the Rescue at Midnight Castle/Firefly's Adventure pilot episode.

Year Two (1983-1984)

Sea Ponies: US

Sealight's Backcard

The first set of Sea Ponies is made up of three ponies. All three are in the same pose, known as the Wavedancer pose. They bear no symbols and have a single-colored mane.

Sea Ponies Commercial

Lyrics are as follows, sung to the familiar tune:

My Little Pony, Sea Ponies,

When I'm takin' a bath, she's so much fun.

Reach out and take her out of her shell,

Then I comb her hair, and when I'm done,

I just can't wait 'til it's time for me

To take my bath with her again.

My Little Pony, Sea Ponies,

I love her like a friend.

I love her like a friend.

All three Year Two Sea Ponies are featured characters in the Rescue at Midnight Castle/Firefly's Adventure pilot episode.

Each Sea Pony includes a shell brush, shell comb, ribbon, and clamshell stand, as well as an order form for Ember.

Surfdancer's Backcard

The UK's Sea Ponies are three different characters, despite Wavebreaker and Wavedancer looking alike.

Each Sea Pony includes a shell brush, shell comb, ribbon, and clamshell stand.

Year Three (1984-1985)

Year Three brought another set of adult Sea Ponies, but it would also be the last that we would see of them. Baby Sea Ponies were introduced this year, and Hasbro would go on to create several more sets of them throughout the years.

High Tide’s Backcard

This year's Sea Ponies are a set of six with a new pose and new conch shell stand. Three of the six Sea Ponies also feature a "mane stripe", a feature common among the unicorns. Their commercial features both them and the Baby Sea Ponies.

Lyrics are as follows, sung to the familiar tune:

My Little Pony, new Sea Ponies,

Each one comes with a pretty new shell.

My Little Pony, Baby Sea Ponies,

They're just little babies. They don't swim very well. (Possibly incorrect.)

They float in the water. (indecipherable) fun.

I can brush and comb their pretty hair too.

New Sea Ponies and Baby Sea Ponies,

They're like a dream come true.

They're like a dream come true.

Sand Dollar, Sea Mist, and Whitecap are all featured in the second animated special Escape from Catrina.

Each Sea Pony includes a shell brush, shell comb, ribbon, round, puffy sticker, and clamshell or conch shell stand, as well as an order form for the Birthflower Ponies.

Baby Sea Ponies

Backstroke's Backcard

The first set of six Baby Sea Ponies debuted this year and would see many other sets in the following G1 years. They bear no symbols and, unlike the Baby Ponies, do not seem to be children of the adult Sea Ponies. They are featured in the same commercial as the Sea Ponies.
