Year 2 Rainbow Ponies Toy Fair Catalog Ad

Year Two brought a variety of new pony friends to the line with more color and new poses. Consumers were introduced to the first unicorns, pegasus ponies, sea ponies, and the very first baby pony. Year Two also had the first playsets released. The introduction of the Rainbow Ponies established the set release model of two earth ponies, two unicorns, and two pegasus ponies that the line would follow for a few years.

Earth Ponies

Bubbles' Backcard

The Earth Ponies are ponies that most closely resemble real-life horses. They don't have horns or wings. Two new poses were introduced with this set – the Bow-Tie or "Shy" pose and the Bubbles or "Sitting" pose. The Earth Ponies are featured in a commercial with the unicorns and pegasus poniesseen here – in which the new poses are called the "Turning" and "Sitting" poses.

Lyrics are as follows, sung to the familiar tune:

My Little Pony, unicorn,

A magical pony with beautiful hair.

My Little Pony, pegasus,

Imagine my pony flying through the air.

The new little ponies, in pretty poses,

Sitting and turning and prancing too.

My Little Pony, My Little Pony,

My pony, I love you.

My pony, I love you.

This first set of Earth Ponies was simply called "My Little Pony." The term "Earth Pony" was later coined in the collecting community to describe them. Spike calls Baby Lickety-Split an "Earthling" when comparing her to the pegasus ponies in My Little Pony: The Movie (1986).

"But they're Pegasus Ponies! You're just an Earthling. You can't fly!" – Spike

Four of the Year Two Earth Ponies, excluding Blossom and Seashell, are featured in the Rescue at Midnight Castle/Firefly's Adventure TV pilot episode. Applejack and Bow-Tie are main characters, while Bubbles and Cotton Candy are background characters with non-speaking roles.

Each pony includes a flower brush, ribbon, and round puffy sticker. They also include an order form for the first mail order pony, Ember.

Pegasus Ponies

Medley's Backcard

The Year Two pegasus ponies and unicorns were sold in the same assortment, also simply called "My Little Pony," and there are two pegasus ponies and four unicorns in the set. They are the first ponies to feature glitter symbols.

Firefly and Medley are two of the main characters in Rescue at Midnight Castle/Firefly's Adventure. They are featured in the same commercial as the Earth Ponies above – seen here.
